Tapio Koskinen

Tapio Koskinen is Head of Technology at Aalto University School of Arts, Design and Architecture. His team of 45 professionals provide instruction and user guidance in 38 specialized learning and research environments supporting hands on learning and experimentation in a wide variety of disciplines ranging from Jacquard weaving to molten glass and 3D printing – from robotics to bio-art and fashion design.

Prior to his current position Tapio was Secretary General of the European Design Innovation Initiative. He facilitated the work of the European Design Leadership Board responsible for policy recommendations for the European Commission on how to better exploit the potential of design for innovation and to reinforce the linkages between design, innovation and competitiveness.

Before joining the School of Arts, Design and Architecture in 2012 Tapio’s work included R&D projects in the area of knowledge intensive work support and learning. Through the project work he gained experience in technology-enhanced learning R&D, professional training, and foresight in Education and Training. He has worked with higher education institutes as well as companies and governing bodies of education.

Aalto University specializes in science, art, technology and business. The QS World University Rankings by Subject 2019 placed Aalto University as 7th best in the world and 4th best in Europe in the field of Art & Design. In Architecture, Aalto was positioned 42nd globally.
